![]() THE STORY OF QUETZALCOATL By Yari
I am writing this after having a dream with Quetzalcoatl where he walked with me discussing the various stories of his life as a man. In the dream, he requested that I write and post this article. If I am asked to do something in a dream, I try to do it unless there is a compelling reason why not.
I started ResonateView.org (then named Resonate.com) many years ago after having a dream where the forces represented by the Mayan daysign glyphs requested that I put the Mayan calendar on the Internet. This was before there were any other such calendars on the Internet. I was told the glyphs have transformative powers and could be used in meditation (see practices area). They said that just gazing on them would transform people.
About a year after writing this story, the book The Gospel of the Toltecs, The Life and Teachings of Quetzalcoatl by anthropologist Frank Diaz was published (available on Amazon). I was intrigued to see the correlations with the version from my dream. Of particular interest to me was the confirmation of the connection between Quetzalcoatl, Chalchitlicue (jade goddess of water), Tlaloc (rain god), and Tlahuiztcalpantechutli (venus as the morning star). See the Image of Sacred Constellation of Dawn Light Dieties
Quetzalcoatl was a god before and after he took human form. He is one of the 13 dawn light lords in the pantheon of 13 dawn light and 9 dark lords (also called day lords and night lords.) The daysigns of the day calendar are sub-deities. They each rule the entire dawn-to-dawn period and have less significance in the order of forces.
The archetype of Quetzalcoatl represents the highest spiritual attainment possible for humans. In his human form he was on the spiritual level of Jesus Christ or Buddha. On a metaphoric level Quetzalcoatl corresponds to the crown of the head for humans (the crown chakra). By some descriptions, Quetzalcoatl the man even looked somewhat like Jesus. He was however a native, not a white man as the christian leaders said. His birth is documented. He was born in the state of Morelos, Mexico. It is said his mother, Chimalma, was virgin warrior and was impregnated from a jade stone given to her by a duck swimming in the pool of a cave. This duck would represent Chalchitlicue's bird form and the jade stone, energy of Tlalocan, the water heaven. Chalchitlicue means "Jade Skirt" in the Nahautl language. Mixcoatl, the husband of Chimalma, was the father of Quetzalcoatl through adoption.
Quetzalcoatl's birth name was Ce Acatl Topitzin. Quetzalcoatl means literally Quetzal--the rare and beautiful bird by that name with long green tail feathers + Coatl which means snake in the Nahuatl language. The name refers to the spiritual union of the sky and the earth. This is obviously sightly different from the usual translation of "plumed serpent" or "feathered serpent". Quetzalcoatl is both the name of a god and the title (spiritual name) for some high priests in Mexico. These priests received this spiritual name as an honor for their perceived spiritual attainment--what better honor than to be named after a god? Ehecatl is an aspect of Quetzalcoat--his form as the wind. But Ehecatl is a day sign in the sub-pantheon of the calendar daysigns; a separate but related entity from the god in the dawn light pantheon.
The dates are difficult to decipher from the old texts because groups of years are repeated and more than one priest was named Quetzalcoatl. But the Quetzalcoatl we are referring to was born somewhere in the later 10th century. He was apparently taller than other natives, had a long thin face and unlike the natives of the time, had a beard. In fact Quetzalcoatl image was not unlike what you would imagine Jesus' face looked like from seeing the "shroud of Turin". It is possible Quetzalcoatl was an incarnation of Jesus and that the energy body was so strong when entering the fetus, it imprinted the DNA, causing Quetzalcoatl to have similar physical characteristics. In any case, the two had a similar energetic configuration and appearance which the catholic priests used to their advantage later when trying to convert the natives.
Quetzalcoatl became the high priest of the city of Tollan (now Tula) the capital city for the Toltecah. The difference between a priest and a shaman is basically that priests and priestesses do ritualistic work for the gods while shamans mostly do ritualistic and healing work for individuals. Some Tolteca priests did not deal with the populace at all, but were involved in high level temple weaving patterns of light together to create certain effects on time and space. The Aztecs carried on this particular skill in Tenochitlan much later. But the project they were working on for generations was not completed by the time Cortez came and destroyed the place. This is another story.
Some stories say that Quetzalcoatl was the ruler of Tollan. He was the spiritual ruler and high priest. There was a mayor of the city named Huemec who was the political ruler. There is confusion in some versions of history between Huemec and Quetzalcoatl. Huemec was responsible for the warfare and expansion of Tolteca influence while Quetzalcoatl spent most of his time in religious practice and teaching. Quetzalcoatl was highly learned in many subjects including astronomy, agriculture and crafts--more so than anyone else in his era. It is not clear how he could acquire his extensive knowledge--perhaps much of it was through divine inspiration. Through his teaching, the Tolteca nation evolved their skills to a high level and became the most respected tribe in the Americas.
Huemec's daughter fell in love with Tezcotlipoca, a newcomer to Tollan. He was a Chichimeca, an ethnic group considered to be uncouth and uneducated wild people who migrated from the North. Tezcotlipoca worked as a pepper vendor without clothes in front of Huemec's daughter's window in order to seduce her. He used his magical powers to entrap her in order to gain political and spiritual advantage in Tollan as part of his plan to overthrow Quetzalcoatl. He won her hand in spite of her father's disapproval because she starved herself until Huemec consented.
The other large ethnic group in Tollan was descended from Nanolacas who migrated from the Veracruz coast and had a high level of culture. Quetzalcoatl descended from this group and there were constant problems in Tollan between these two ethnic groups. This group descended from the Olmecah and before that from Atlantis.
The struggle between Tezcotlipoca and Quetzalcoatl is a struggle that represents the end of the 5th world (December, 2012) era. Tezcotlipoca and his two sorcerer cohorts represent the qualities of trickery, male dominance, warfare, human sacrifice, wealth and death. The corresponding gods in the 13 dawn light pantheon to these sorcerers are named Tezcotlipoca, Teoyaomiqui and Chalmecatechutli. (See the 13 Dawn Light article)
Part of the Quetzalcoatl 5th world struggle is to contain of Tezcotlipoca, Teoyaomiqui and Chalmecatechutli and effectively replace them with the high trinity: Ometeotl, Ometechutli and Omechihuatl. The fact that Tezcotlipoca, Teoyaomiqui and Chalmecatechutli have not yet been contained is evident in the rampant warfare, terrorism and atrocities that occur on this planet.
Quetzalcoatl was against human sacrifice and other atrocities that humans perpetrate on each other. Tezcotlipoca represents those forces that have an investment in these horrors continuing. This is a dualistic struggle. If you think this does not concern you, perhaps you have carved out a heavenly niche for yourself. But whether you are suffering or not, others are, and if you were doing anything significant to contain these evil forces, you could become a target for them as Quetzalcoatl, Jesus, Ghandi and others were.
You can understand more of Tezcotlipoca's nature by reading the letter concerning him posted on this site. In one story we see how Tezcotlipoca hypnotized the young people of Tollan with his flute playing and then led them off a cliff to their death. Tezcotlipoca preferred to use trickery, because he could gain energy from his victims in this manner. Tezcotlipoca means, "smoking mirror" in Nahuatl. Quetzalcoatl had never seen a mirror until Tezcotlipoca showed him one--they were rare at the time. He used a mirror as part of his sorcery to confuse and attract Quetzalcoatl's self-esteem. Tezcotlipoca then used is powers of trickery to entice Quetzalcoatl to drink a magical potion probably with liquor and psychedelic substances.
With Quetzalcoatl reeling from the potion, Tezcotlipoca dressed Quetzalcoatl in a bizarre manner and then paraded him around Tollan. Tezcotlipoca and his sorcerer friends then placed Quetzalcoatl in bed with his priestest sister Quetzalpetatl who they had also drugged. Some accounts say Quetzalcoatl had sex with her. This certainly did not happen. In fact the sorcerers raped her and put them together to make it appear to Quetzalcoatl and his followers that they had sex. A simple imperical test will prove this point. Go without alcohol for 6 months, then drink a liter of Tequila and take psychodelic mushrooms at the same time. I promise you that you will not be able to sexually perform. Also remember that native people and women are biologically more sensitive to the affects of alcohol. Quetzalcoatl and Quetzalpetatl were following a path of celibacy to conserve spiritual power.
Tezcotlipoca spread the rumor that Quetzalcoatl and his sister had copulated. Waking in bed with his sister, a high priestess, was a disgrace. Quetzalcoatl had lost to Tezcotlipoca by falling for his trickery. Obviously Tezcotlipoca could have poisoned Quetzalcoatl as easy as drugging him, but Tezcotlipoca felt he would get more energy from the contest by tricking Quetzalcoatl into humiliation than he would by killing him--leaving a martyr legend served nothing.
The ramifications of this loss would be that the earth would continue to be deceived by the forces representing these three sorcerers and their even darker lord counterparts. Quetzalcoatl decided to leave Tula. He cried as he traveled with his followers across the mountains towards the Veracruz coast. People don't understand when they read these accounts why he would cry. Why would an enlightened man cry? But didn't Jesus also cry in the garden of Gethsemane? Quetzalcoatl was not crying out of self-pity for his own disgrace, he was expressing grief for the human suffering that he knew would continue. He cried and left his handprints in the rocks in the mountains.
Quetzalcoatl warned the nations that if they had not changed their evil ways by a certain date (the exact day in fact that Cortez arrived) men would arrive in ships with wings and this would signal the end for the native dominions ruling the continent. People misunderstand this point and believe Quetzalcoatl was prophesizing his own return, but this is not true. He was warning the people that their refusal to follow his principles would eventually mean their demise. Cortez justified his slaughter and total destruction of indigenous cities by the fact that the native peoples engaged in human sacrifice and horrific war campaigns. The reason that the natives did not put up more of a fight against Cortez and the conquistadors was because of Quetzalcoatl's prophecy. They knew they could not win because they had failed Quetzalcoatl.
When Quetzalcoatl crossed the mountains and entered caves where he took a shamanic journey to the realm of the 9 dark lords and fought them all. He took on the fight in order to provide hope for the 6th world and he won this battle. This is significant in that it means there is hope for a better world if we survive the struggles of these times.
Quetzalcoatl traveled in Mexico and taught sacred things, gathering more followers. At the end of his time he went to the coast. Here he made a raft with a temple on it and sailed on a raft out to sea. His followers saw the raft go up in flames and then saw birds flying from the raft towards Venus as the morning star. This part of the story is extremely significant. The fire on the raft was caused by "the fire from within"--spontaneous human combustion. The dawn light lord Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli rules Venus in its morning star phase. This name means literally "Dawn Light Lord" and it is interesting that Quetzalcoatl is also sometimes called this and the two are even considered the same in some stories.
Quetzalcoatl thus flew to and reached Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli who represents the quality of the souls of transcended humans after they leave the body. Thus Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli is responsible for bringing humans into their "Buddhahood" or "Christhood" or "Quetzalcoatlhood". It is interesting that Quetzalcoatl's bird is the wild turkey, not the quetzal. The quetzal is Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli's bird. Why would Quetzalcoatl be named after Tlahuizcalpancuhtli's bird? Because this is what he aspired to. In almost every tradition Venus represents beauty, grace, subtle energies and radiance--the necessary components of enlightenment.
In the story of the Buddha, Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli is also the key force that triggers his enlightenment. After years of struggle, austerities and vigilant practice the Buddha crawled under the bodi tree and finally became enlightened at the instant that his gaze met Venus as the morning star.
In the end, Quetzalcoatl succeeds.
