CHARACTERISTICS AND REQUIREMENTS FOR NAGUALS (NAHUALES)
By Yari

The nahuales in ancient times were recognized by certain characteristics. The following list was given by the Totonacas in the 16th century.

1. Unusual circumstances or weather phenomena is noted surrounding his or her birth.
2. Knows the lords of the dawn and lords of the night.
3. Oracle of the rain--connection to Tlaloc.
4. Gives advise to kings and princes as well as commoners.
5. Organizes Tlaloc rituals.
6. Averts the menace of famine and disease.
7. Predicts the death of kings and downfall of villages.
8. Can avert or transform into a hailstorms as well as other weather manifestations (connection to Tlaloc.)
9. Lives celibate in a temple and where she engages in fasting and meditation
10. Holds well the title and office of Astrologer-Brujo.
11. Is able to manifest his double (nahualli) in various forms including human, animal, birds and weather phenomena.
12. In the sacred calendar--the Tonalpohualli--she is usually born under the sign of Quiahuitl (rain) or Quiauhtli (eagle--the bird of Tlaloc.)

Ideally each town would have four nahuales--one for each direction. Each nahual would be responsible to guard his or her direction against negative forces and the invasion of nahuals from other towns. The ability of the nahual to take different forms is the result of his achievement of the creation of his nahualli, see: ...Birth of the Nahualli. This is the basic difference between the practice of Nagualism and Tonalism. A master of the Tonal would still be a Brujo and could still be an astrologer, but not having birthed the Nahualli, or second soul, he could not manifest in different forms. Note this manifestation ability is not the same as astral travel, or lucid dreaming which a master of Tonalism could also be accomplished in.

Names of historic nahuales include: Quetzalcoatl, Martin Ocelotl, Tzutzumatzin, Malinalxochitl, and Ekbalam (black jaguar).
